KOPERVIK, Norway – Statoil and its partners in the Johan Sverdrup field in the central Norwegian North Sea have recommended a subsea export pipeline for the associated gas.
The 165-km (102-mi) subsea pipeline would be tied into the Statpipe trunkline off the island of Karmøy for onward transport of the gas to the Kårstø processing complex north of Stavanger.
The new line would have a capacity of 10 MMcm/d (353 MMcf/d), much larger than Johan Sverdrup’s early-phase requirements, estimated at 3-5 MMcm/d (106-177 MMcf/d). The remaining capacity would be available for gas exports from other fields.
“Piping gas from Johan Sverdrup to Kårstø represents the most cost-effective solution for this field, and the best overall area solution for the Utsira High in a long-term perspective,” said Brian Bjordal, CEO of Norwegian offshore pipelines operator Gassco.
Landing associated gas from Johan Sverdrup would not entail modifications at Kårstø. However, the decision on a gas solution remains conditional on a final investment decision for the development.
