ABERDEEN, UK – The drillship West Navigator has spudded an exploration well on the Novus prospect in the Norwegian Sea.

According to operator Faroe Petroleum, well 6507/10-2S is being drilled in license PL645, in around 300 m (984 ft) water depth. The location is 9 km (5.6 mi) south of theHeidrun oil production complex in the Halten Terrace region.

The main targets are the Jurassic reservoirs of the Garn, Ile, and Tilje formations in the Novus West and Novus East fault blocks. Drilling of a side track into Novus East would depend on results in the main wellbore, which targets the Novus West horst block.

Analysis suggests a potential stacked reservoir analogous to the nearby Smørbukk field. A discovery could be tied into nearby infrastructure.

Other partners in the well are Centrica Resources Norge, Skagen 44, Spike Exploration Holdings, and Concedo.

In the central Norwegian North Sea, the semisubmersibleBredford Dolphin has started drilling appraisal well 16/5-5 in PL410 for operator Lundin Norway. This will target the Luno II South structure, 9 km southeast of the Luno II discovery well 16/4-6S in PL359, which is in turn 15 km (9.3 mi) south of the current Edvard Grieg field development.

Lundin’s main objective is to prove an extension of Luno II, which could hold resources of up to 120 MMboe. Drilling is estimated to last 40 days.
