OSLO, Norway – Statoil Petroleum (OSE:STL) has proven a new oil accumulation close to the Norne field in the Norwegian Sea.
The semisubmersibleSonga Trym drilled well 6507/3-10 in 374 m (1,227 ft) of water in production license PL 159 C, 12 km (7.4 mi) south of Norne.
According to the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD), the well encountered a 10-m (32.8-ft) oil column in the Mid-Jurassic Garn formation, and further oil in a thin sand layer in the upper part of the Tilje formation.
This was the first well on the permit, which was awarded in February 2008.
Songa Trym next heads to PL 128 in the Norwegian Sea to drill wildcat 6608/10-15 for Statoil.
Additionally, NPD has authorized Statoil’s use of the semisubmersibleTransocean Leader for exploration drilling in North Sea PL 050, awarded in 2012. The rig will drill wells 34/10-54 S and 34/10-54 A.
