DUBLIN, Ireland – The Irish Minister for Natural Resources has approved an extensive new 2D seismic survey over the Irish Atlantic margin.
Eni Ireland will manage in cooperation with the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources the 18,000-km (11,184-mi), full-fold program, said to be the largest regional seismic survey to date offshore Ireland.
The survey vesselBGP Explorer already is in operations from a base in Killybegs. The program is expected to take 145 days to complete, but depending on weather conditions, part of the survey could be acquired in 2014.
Minister Fergus O’Dowd said the project is being jointly funded from the department’s own research budget and with finance provided by the industry.
“The…survey is also designed to infill data gaps that exist, particularly in the Southern Porcupine, Rockall, and Hatton basins.
“Most importantly, the survey should go a long way towards revealing the true oil and gas potential of Ireland’s frontier basins.
“The data should allow resource potential to be predicted with much greater confidence and enable both the industry and the government to adequately evaluate future licensing opportunities.”
