OKPO, South Korea – Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) has cut first steel for the hull of Petronas’ new floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) vessel. This is due to be completed and commissioned in 2015.
Petronas signed the engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and commissioning contract for the project with theTechnip/DSME consortium in June 2012.
The FLNG facility will be stationed on theKanowit gas field, 180 km (112 mi) offshore Sarawak, with capacity to produce 1.2 MM tons/yr of LNG.
Petronas says the technology is an important part of its efforts to develop gas from Malaysia’s remote and stranded fields, which would otherwise be uneconomic.
