Atwood orders fourth ultra-deepwater drillship

Atwood Oceanics has exercised an option with Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering for a fourth ultra-deepwater drillship, to be named the Atwood Archer.

HOUSTON – Atwood Oceanics has exercised an option with Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering for a fourth ultra-deepwater drillship, to be named the Atwood Archer.

The new drillship is scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2015 at a cost of approximately $635 million.

TheAtwood Archer, a DP-3 dynamically positioned, dual-derrick rig capable of operating in 12,000-ft (3,658-m) water depths, will have the same design as previously ordered Atwood Advantage, Atwood Achieverand Atwood Admiral.

The Houston-based driller has an option with DSME for a fifth ultra-deepwater drillship that must be exercised by March 31, 2014.
