LONDON – Genel Energy has contracted the deepwater semisubmersible Noble Paul Romano for a drilling campaign offshore North Africa. The two-year program starts in 4Q 2013.

Currently, the rig is undergoing a special five- year class survey in Valletta, Malta. Its rated water depth is up to 1,800 m (5,905 ft), with a total drilling depth of about 7,500 m (24,606 ft). AGR will provide drilling management services.

Dr. John Hurst, head of exploration for Genel, said: “Securing the rig is an important component of our commitment to deliver an exploration drilling campaign of five to six high-impact wells per annum, targeting over 3.3 Bboe of net unrisked prospective resources.”

Genel plans to drill a well on Area 4 offshore Malta later this year or early next year, inpartnership with Mediterranean Oil and Gas.
