LONDON – Falkland Oil and Gas Ltd. (FOGL) will P&A its latest exploration well offshore the Falkland Islands over the next 10 days.
Well 31/12-01 was drilled on theScotia prospect to a subsurface depth of 5,555 m (18,225 ft). It encountered strong gas shows while drilling the target section.
Wireline log analysis suggests this interval comprises 50 m (164 ft) of hydrocarbon-bearing, fine-grained sandstones and claystones. Reservoir quality is fairly poor, although some zones have up to 20% porosity. Other thin hydrocarbon bearing sandstones were encountered beneath the main target.
FOGL says the well has proven a working hydrocarbon system in the mid-Cretaceous fan play in the South and East Falkland basin and has also demonstrated that Scotia is a viable stratigraphic trap. However, the seismic amplitude anomaly that defines Scotia covers an area of 350 sq km (135 sq mi), so further studies are needed to assess whether better quality reservoir may exist elsewhere in the structure.
PGS’M/V Ramform Sterling will shortly arrive in the area to start a new 3D survey, designed to map sand fairways in the play. The data, combined with detailed analysis of the Scotia well, should enable differentiation between oil and gas prospects.
Tim Bushell, chief executive of FOGL, said the company’s forward program will focus on:
- Evaluation of source rock potential and hydrocarbon migration in order to define potential oil bearing prospects
- Identification of good quality reservoir within the Tertiary and Cretaceous prospects and plays
- Potential commercialization of gas and associated liquids in the South and East Falkland basin.
