DHAHRAN, Saudi Arabia – Saudi Aramco board chairman Ali Ibrahim Al-Naimi has launched reservoir water injection operations at the company’s offshore Manifa field.

These are in preparation for first-phase production of Arabian heavy crude in the first half of 2013. Initial output of up to 500,000 b/d will gradually increase to 900,000 b/d by 2014.

Manifa’s crude oil will supply in-Kingdom refineries currently under construction. These comprise Satorp in Jubail, a joint venture with Total; Yasref in Yanbu, a joint venture with Sinopec; and the future Jazan refinery, which has the Aramco board’s approval for financing, with contracts set to be awarded in the next few weeks.

The chairman and other Aramco board members were visiting theKaran gas field, the company’s first offshore non-associated gas project, and also inspected production platforms.
