OSLO, Norway – Statoil (OSE:STL; NYSE:STO) has started drilling its latest appraisal well on the Johan Sverdrup field in Norwegian North Sea license PL265.
The semisubmersibleOcean Vanguard expects to drill well 16/2-14 to a planned TD of 1,960 m (6,430 ft) subsurface in about 75 days.
According to partnerLundin Petroleum, the aim is to appraise the crestal part of the structure, and to determine the thickness and quality of Jurassic-age sandstone reservoir on a structural high between appraisal wells 16/2-8 and 16/2-10.
An extensive data acquisition program will be conducted in preparation for the field development of the Johan Sverdrup discovery.
In the same region of the Utsira High, the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate has authorizedWintershall Norway to drill a wildcat in PL 457.
The location is 3 km (1.8 mi) north of the Lundin-operatedEdvard Grieg field and 3 km (1.8 mi) east of the 16/1-9 Ivar Aasen (ex-Draupne) oil discovery well.
This is the first well drilled on the license, awarded in February 2008 under Norway’s APA 2007 round.
