LONDON – Apache has found gas with its first exploration well offshore Kenya.
According to partner Tullow Oil, theMbawa-1 in the L8 license area encountered gas in the shallowest objective. It was drilled to a depth of 2,553 m (8,375 ft), intersecting around 52 m (171 ft) of net gas pay in porous Cretaceous sandstones. The well will now be extended to a TD of 3,275 m (10,745 ft) to target further exploration objectives.
Other partners are Origin Energy and Pancontinental.
Tullow Exploration Director Angus McCoss said: “A gas discovery on prognosis in the shallowest objective at Mbawa-1 is an encouraging start to our East African Transform Margin exploration campaign. This is the first hydrocarbon discovery offshore Kenya. The ongoing drilling remains on course to test for any deeper oil potential within this gas prone region.”
