DHAHRAN, Saudi Arabia – Saudi Aramco has started up processing facilities at Khursaniyah associated with the offshore Karan gas development.
One gas-treatment train and one sulfur-recovery train are now fully operational at the Khursaniyah Gas Plant (KGP). The facility is dedicated to processing 1 bcf/d of non-associated gas from the Karan offshore field.
By mid-year, two further gas trains will be in service, lifting the Karan gas processing capabilities at KGP to 1.8 bcf/d.
At the offshore complex, one tie-in platform and three production platforms now are complete, with a fifth platform due to be operational this summer.
The platforms are remotely operated and controlled from Khursaniyah. From the tie-in platform, gas is sent via an underwater pipeline, to the facilities at Khursaniyah. H2S, CO2, and water are all removed from the feed gas stream in the gas-treatment trains.
The treated gas is then ready for use. The hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide are directed to the sulfur recovery unit where the hydrogen sulfide is converted to elemental sulfur.
