TEHRAN, Iran – Five phases of the South Pars gas field development in the Persian Gulf are nearing completion, according to Iranian news service Shana.

Deputy Minister of Petroleum Ahamad Qalebani expects phases 12, 15-16 and 17-18 to all come online by March 20, the end of the Iranian calendar year.

Among other related developments, Pars Oil and Gas Company (POGC), has commissioned the country’s Enhancing Recovery Rate Institute to study and monitor the South Pars gas reservoir to find ways of lifting the field’s recovery rate.

POGC has also contracted Iran’s Global Petro Tech Company to drill two wells to investigate the potential of the South Pars oil layer.

The $180-million contract involves 6,000 m (19,685 ft) of horizontal drilling over 470 days. The aim is to use the results of the wells for use in a development model of the reservoir and a master development plan of the oil layer.

According to Shana, Iran’s share of the oil layer in offshore blocks A, B and C is estimated at 7.5 Bbbl.

Elsewhere in the Persian Gulf, the Ferdowsi heavy oil field is one of several projects to be prioritized for development under Iran’s buyback program.

Bahman Samimi Sadeh of Petroleum Engineering and Development Company (PEDEC) told Shana Ferdowsi could deliver 300,000 b/d of oil after development of all its phases. He claimed the field included four oil layers with estimated reserves of 30-35 Bbbl.

Finally, in the Caspian Sea Khazar Oil Company’s recent deepwater gas discovery has been named Sardare Jangal. Iran’s Petroleum Minister Rostam Qasemi has claimed the field contains reserves of more than 10 tcf.
