LONDON – Anadarko’s Montserrado-1 exploration well off Liberia has discovered sub-commercial oil, according to partner Tullow Oil.

The well was drilled in block LB-15 to a TD of 5,400 m (17,716 ft), encountering good-quality, water-bearing sands in the main target structure. In a deeper secondary (Late Cretaceous) objective, around 8 m (26 ft) of hydrocarbon pay was intersected and a sample of light oil was recovered.

Tullow claims the outcome is a significant, establishing a working hydrocarbon system in the Liberian basin. Well data will be integrated with existing 3D seismic for future drilling offshore Liberia.

The well is being P&A’d and the drillship will next mobilize north to Sierra Leone waters to drill the tophole section of the Jupiter-1 well followed by the potentially high-impact Mercury-2 appraisal well, both on block SL-07B-11.
