LONDON -- EnCore Oil has discovered oil with the Varadero exploration well 28/9-2 in the UK Central North Sea.

TheGalaxy II rig drilled well 28/9-2 in block 28/9 to a TD of 5,205 ft (1,586 m), encountering good quality hydrocarbon-bearing reservoir sandstones at 4,020 ft (1,225 m) within the target Tay sandstones.

An initial review suggests a 400-ft (122-m) hydrocarbon-bearing interval with net pay of 106 ft (32 m). Wireline sampling and pressure testing of the hydrocarbon-bearing zones indicates 26° API oil, while analysis of the logs has revealed high quality sands with average porosities of around 33%.

After it P&A’s the well, the rig will transfer 4 km (2.5 mi) to the southwest to drill the Burgman prospect.
EnCore CEO Alan Booth said: “We are becoming increasingly confident that the seismic data directly highlights the presence of high quality injectite reservoirs in block 28/9 which, to date have all proven to be hydrocarbon bearing.

“This well also encountered deeper sands of Cromarty age (the main reservoir in the nearby Catcher discoveries) although, as anticipated, they were not hydrocarbon bearing at the Varadero location. We now look forward to drilling at Burgman where we have targets in the Tay and Cromarty as well as the higher risk Jurassic Fulmar formation."
